About
“At the end of my degree studies, I was fortunate enough to be shortlisted as a nominated artist to take part in The Platform Graduate Exhibition, amongst several other artists from both Arts University Plymouth and The University of Plymouth.”
Brooks’ Expansion of Self 2.0 is an adapted work from his previously exhibited piece Expansion of Self. This work takes a new form to incorporate its new space, whilst becoming a continuation of its intended meaning. Depicting brooks’ first autobiographical work, Expansion of Self 2.0 becomes an almost self portrait of the artist's journey, tackling his inner thoughts of self acceptance in his creative practice and his battle in discovery of his position in the art world.
“During the exhibition of this work, I hated it. From the way it turned out, to the way it looked, thinking it was just a mess. Not standing well in comparison to the other work on display, feeling no personal connection to the work itself, even though it's an autobiographical piece. However, after spending time away from the studio and reflecting, I bloody love it. Fully realising now what I only touched on back then, it's a work built with passion yet pumped with all my anxieties and confusions of the past 8 years. Now to me it’s a piece that I can look back on and grow from.”
